SLOC president Romney denies using profanity
02/16/2002
Snowbasin venue commander Capt. Terry Shaw has demanded an apology from
Salt Lake Organizing Committee president Mitt Romney for allegedly using
an expletive at a member of his team, the Salt Lake Tribune
reported.
Romney's well-publicized stint at directing traffic came after the
Olympic boss encountered a traffic snare, including a line of backed-up
spectator buses, on his way to Snowbasin. Shaun Knopp said Romney
approached him, asking who he was and what was he doing, while adding a
few expletives.
Romney denied the charge, saying the only profanity he used was "hell."
Utah Department of Public Safety chief Robert Flowers has decided
against a profanity probe.
Enough already
A late release on the media communications computer announced that
Canadian figure skating pairs "gold medalists" Jamie Sale and David
Pelletier will hold another news conference on Saturday morning.
Nothing personal, but everything that happened Friday was to make
certain this controversy faded into the background and let the athletes
now competing get their time in the limelight. So, please, step back and
let the Games begin. Again.

Another example of people in the workplace taking time on the computer
to do something besides work.
Following the announcement that Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier
would be given a gold medal in pairs figure skating, NBCOlympics.com
asked if the right decision had been made by the International Olympic
Committee. Just over three hours later, more than 140,000 users had
logged on and voted.
Just so you don't have to surf, 88 percent of voters thought the IOC
made the right decision.
Juan more time
This used to be his turf, but former IOC president Juan Antonio
Samaranch insists he's just another fan at the Winter Olympics.
"I am having a lot of fun," Samaranch said Thursday. "I go to events,
see old friends and try to be a good ex-president."
Samaranch retired last July after 21 years as IOC president, a time that
included the Salt Lake City bid scandal and some of the committee's
toughest financial and political times.
"It's much easier to be an ex-president," he said.
All-around athlete
Timothy Goebel's bronze medal marked the first time since 1992 an
American man won a medal in figure skating. His first elementary school
principal said it was clear early on Goebel had the ability to achieve
something special.
"He excelled in all the sports, but didn't play in organized sports
because he didn't have much time," said Valerie Zemko, principal of St.
Colette Elementary School. "He was busy practicing his skating."
Lipinski on the scene
Tara Lipinski is hanging around the Olympics, even though girl from
Sugar Land, Texas, is not here to defend the title she won at Nagano.
Instead, Tara, is here doing interviews, TV appearances, and is a
behind-the-scenes correspondent for "Entertainment Tonight."
"I love the whole atmosphere here," Lipinski told the
Detroit Free Press. "I'd forgotten about that. It's a good feeling."
Lipinski's goal is to become an actress and she has taken an apartment
in Los Angeles. She is taking acting lessons, and could head to college
to major in drama.
