Postcards Home Reports from Belo Interactive contributors at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia John Miller: Notebook from Down Under Down Under but back on top!!! 09/13/2000 By John Miller / KTVB-TV, Boise, Idaho Second entry Sept. 12 I have trouble connecting to the Internet from home. What made me think I could do it from Sydney?
A day after our Internet access crashed, with some quick thinking (and a flashy Mark Johnson credit card maneuver), we're back on-line, and on the move in Sydney. Things are falling into place here in New South Wales that's the Australian state where Sydney is located. We were surprised when one Sydney teen we interviewed actually knew where Idaho is. "Right, mate that's where you got all those bloody potatoes!" For all of you Boiseans who asked me to bring back a koala we actually met one willing to make the trip. We visited a kangaroo and koala park on our first day in Sydney.
Did you know koalas aren't bears? They're marsupials. We got up close and personal with one who seemed to want to climb into our bag. (But the park rangers weren't sure we'd have enough eucalyptus leaves in Idaho to feed him. That's all they eat, you know.) Anyway, we fed some kangaroos, and boy, howdy, mate! It was a hoot! We're also settling into our digs in what's called the International Broadcast Center. We are sharing space with dozens of affiliates from around the country, all packed like sardines in one room. The guy who sits next to me works for a TV station in Sacramento. His name is Del Rodgers. He used to play football for the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers. I keep leaving my stuff in his workspace. I'm worried he's going to cite me for "offsides" and rip my head off. Luckily, he's a very nice guy, as are all the people we're working with. (We'll see how long that lasts in the NBC sardine can!!) We are having an incredible time, and look forward to giving you the best coverage we can. G'day! John Miller is a reporter for KTVB-TV in Boise, Idaho, a Belo Interactive affiliate. He is writing a daily notebook column from the Olympics.
