Postcards Home Reports from Belo Interactive contributors at the Olympics in Sydney, AustraliaMark Johnson: Daily from Down Under 09/25/2000 By Mark Johnson / KTVB-TV, Boise, Idaho It's the mid-way point of the Olympics and things are beginning to shape up nicely. The US is in control after wonderful outings in the pool and look to "dominate" in the Athletics (which is what they call Track and Field everywhere else).
Idaho's Stacy Dragila, who is from a small community outside Sacramento, is about to have her moment with the victory stand in the first ever Women's Olympic Pole Vault. That happens tonight and she is ready. Earlier today I spoke to her agent who said..."she believes this is all 'in the plan' and tonight we'll know."
If it happens, the next 3 days will be filled with NBC TODAY SHOW appearances, press conferences, ceremonies and all of the things that go along with winning gold. Just wait til she comes home! Pocatello, Idaho will be rolling out the red carpet and handing her the keys to the city! Auburn, California will do the same for a woman who left for Idaho following her high school graduation in hopes of finding collegiate success as a heptathlete.
Instead she will go down in Olympic history as the first woman to win a gold medal in pole vaulting. I have a nervous "twinge" just thinking about it, and all I have to do is watch! The stadium is packed- -over 120,000 fans- -biggest of any of the Summer games, cheering for their Australian favorites, but also happy for someone who didn't think the Olympics would be a part of her future when she went to Idaho State University 9 years ago. A future that by midnight tonight should be golden!
Good luck Stacy...see you tomorrow on TODAY!
